Women's History Month

March is a time when we stop and reflect upon the contributions of women to our society and history.  As part of our reflection, we want to oberve and contemplate the journey women have struggled through to gain a greater voice and role in our society.  Slowly, Americans worked at changing the founding fathers' words from "All men are created equal" to "All people are created equal"!

During the month of March, we have planned several activities to help our students grow in their understanding of the contributions made by women to our society.  We will also focus on their struggle to gain a political voice.

Dear Parents/Guardians:

In honor and acknowledgement of the contribution of women to our society and the struggles they endured to gain a political voice, several activities have been planned for this month.

FIRST, we will begin our study with the presentation Iron Jawed Angels.  Iron Jawed Angels is the story of the women's sufferage movement.  During this difficult time, many women throughout our country stood up for their beliefs and endured great hardships and personal costs.  Students will  complete a brief reflection assignment after viewing the program.

SECOND, as part of our study, students will research one important woman and write a public service announcement (50 points - 25 written announcement, 25 oral presentation).   Your announcement should briefly describe the contributions, accomplishments, and anything that you feel is noteworthy about the individual.  Also, you need to explain why you selected that individual.  You will present this individual to your homeroom as an oral presentation.  Your oral presentation will be evaluated in the following areas:
    * audible (can all hear and understand you?)
   * expressive (do you speak with expression, fluency, and intonation?)
   * eye contact (do you make eye contact with the audience?)
   * organized (do you show evidence of organization and planning?)
   * time (do you speak for the correct amount of time?)

THIRD, students will conduct two interviews (75 points - 25 points for questions, 25 points for each essay).  You need to interview two women -- one must be 65 or older, the other between 40 and 64.  Your first step is to develop the questions you want to ask each interviewee.  Your questions should cover the person’s way of life, their opportunities, and their aspirations.

After the interview, you need to write a short narrative essay on each interview.

Thank you for your continued support.
