Welcome to
The Explorers!

Understanding expectations is extremely important to achieving success.  When we don't know what is expected of us, it becomes harder to know what to do and how to complete the task.  This packet is designed to assist you and your parents in understanding what we expect from you.  We believe these expectations will lead to success.  Please read the information carefully and if you have any comments of questions, please send an email to The Explorers.

TEAM GUIDELINES AND EXPECTATIONS

The objective of our team guidelines is to create a positive learning environment for all students.  We have decided on a simple set of rules that, if followed, make life in the classroom easier.  If you follow these rules, you will never meet the assistant principal for disciplinary action.  On the other hand, if you cannot follow these simple rules, the consequences could lead to a series of disciplinary actions neither you, nor your parents wish to see.

  1. FOLLOW DIRECTIONS THE FIRST TIME THEY ARE GIVEN.
  2. BE ON TIME (in your seat and ready to work when the bell rings).
  3. BE PREPARED FOR CLASS (with the necessary and appropriate materials – textbook, notebook, pens and pencils, paper, agenda).
  4. BE COURTEOUS (respect the rights, property, and feelings of others).
  5. ONE PERSON SPEAKS AT A TIME (raise your hand and wait to be recognized before speaking).

*  The Carl Sandburg Middle School Discipline Policy is always in effect.  Remember to read and understand the student handbook in your Agenda.

*  Also individual teachers may add to this list for their specific class.  Please consult each teacher's web site for any additions.

CONSEQUENCES:

When the Team Guidelines are not followed, these steps will be taken:

STEP 1:  Verbal warning

STEP 2:  Contact parent/guardian (via phone or note)

STEP 3:  Office Referral

SEVERE CLAUSE - any severe misconduct will lead to an immediate office referral.

If a warning in class does not change your behavior, the teacher can and will REMOVE you to another teacher’s room.  This will require you to complete the assignment started in the sending teacher’s room, give you a chance to cool down, and give the teacher the opportunity to consider the necessary steps to follow in helping to correct the behavior and minimize classroom disruptions.

POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT:

Without exception, the team members agree that students respond much better to positive reinforcement.  After all, it is our chosen job to encourage our students to grow and help them build their self-esteem.  Throughout the school year, The Explorers team will acknowledge students hard work and success with team celebrations and Reward Activities.  Students completing all their homework in all four major subjects will earn the right to attend.  Some past activities included:  games and sports in the gym, movie & popcorn, and ice cream social.

TEAM HOMEWORK POLICY

Parents and students should expect homework on a regular basis. All students were given an agenda, which is a complete study organizer.  Students ARE expected to write all assignments in their agendas.  Parents are asked to check those assignments (to make sure they are complete).  The purpose of this procedure is to ensure the healthy habit of recording and completing homework assignments on a regular basis.  If a student is not writing down homework, parent(s) will be notified.

Each teacher has his or her specific requirements for homework.  Please consult each teacher’s web site to get this information.  The following are general guidelines universally enforced by the team’s teachers for homework assignments:

  1. Homework is expected to be on time and presented in a neat, legible manner.  The  teacher reserves the right to have a student redo that assignment if it is sloppy or reflects a lack of effort.
  2. Homework is not to be done during another teacher’s class period.
  3. If you are going to miss any class, you must check with the teacher before class begins.  You are responsible for all material and assignments covered in class, including homework.

If absent, a student is required to make up all work.  It is expected that students will call classmates to get their assignments if they are absent.  Work on finding two reliable homework buddies the first week of school.

It is also expected that if a student is absent for any length of time, the guidance counselor should be notified and an assignment round up can be arranged.  A fellow student or a parent can pick up the assignments at the end of the day.  Please give the guidance office a days notice prior to picking up so that the teachers will not have enough time to prepare the students assignments.

Please remember, parents need prior permission (10 school days) from Mrs. Kelly for educational trips as is listed in the agenda.

SPECIAL EVENTS

There are many special events that are offered throughout the year (i.e. guest speakers, assemblies, field trips, etc.).  It is a privilege to participate in these activities, which enrich our curriculum.  Both students and parents will be notified if chronic improper behavior is restricting the opportunity to attend a given event.

CONFERENCES

Conferences can be set up through Mrs. Rose in the school’s Guidance Office (215-943-0360).  The team is usually available to meet with parents between 1:15 and 1:45 pm.  Adequate notice is necessary to schedule this appointment.
